The Speaking module of the IELTS test consists of 3 parts. Part 1 is named, “Introduction and Interview”. In part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test, the candidate is asked a series of questions on common day-to-day conversational topics such as sports, music, films, art, vacations, travelling, hotels, celebrities and so on. These questions often require a short answer with some reasoning. Followed by that is part 2 which is named, “Long turn”. Although it is more popularly known as or referred to as “Cue card”. The reason why the original name is “Long turn”, is that in this part, the candidate gets a longer turn to speak i.e., the candidate is required to speak for 2 minutes on a given topic. The topic is, of course, given by the examiner either typed on paper if the exam is taking place face-to-face, or it is typed on a document and the shown to the candidate via screen-sharing if the exam is taking place online. Along with the topic, there are always 4 cues and hence, it came to be known as “Cue card”. Lastly, part 3 is named, “Discussion”. In this part of the test, candidates are again asked a series of questions on specific topics. However, the key difference here is that unlike part 1, the answers in part 3 are supposed to be rather detailed. Also, the questions will be a bit more complicated as well. Nevertheless, the IELTS speaking test does not involve any questions that require technical knowledge on any subject.

Below is a list of part 2 topics with accompanying cues for you to help familiarise yourself. Please note that it is never a good idea to prepare responses in advance because it will sound like memorised speech in the actual test and you will lose a lot of marks. When you look at IELTS Speaking topics, focus only on familiarising yourself i.e., becoming aware of the kind of questions to expect.
